WILLIAM D SCOTT INTRODUCES
ARETE COLLECTION
By George Sellers
George Sellers is a classically-trained artist who studied sculpture in Italy. George had also been doing the window art for years in New York at luxury jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels, working with the famous Douglas Little. This Dallas-based sculptor, who started his career apprenticing with a master stone carver in Italy, works almost exclusively with the underappreciated medium of plaster. “We study the frescoes and paintings on ceilings, but look right past the incredible moldings,” says Sellers.
“I think of furniture and sculpture as the same thing,” says George. “Our furnishings intrigue and inspire, and they just happen to be functional, as well.” Sellers is talking about Areté Collection, a line of nature-inspired furniture, accessories and lighting that he launched with co-founder Bradley Clifford in 2014. The result: a refined take on faux bois with a dose of whimsy that would even satisfy author Lewis Carroll. “The concept of nature indoors is ancient,” says Sellers. “The Greeks perfected it and we’re simply continuing the thought.”
